Princess Alice was Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's second daughter. She married a German prince, the eventual Grand Duke Louis of Hesse (an arranged marriage, though one with love), and was the mother of the last Tsarina of Russia. Her life is vividly presented by the author, who supplies plenty of letters to give us Alice's authentic feelings and opinions, and a sympathetic voice regarding the many tragedies of Alice's life. Reading this biography actually gave me a better understanding of the character of Alexandra, the last Tsarina, as she resembled Alice in many respects, but she lacked Alice's liberalism, intelligence and stoicism. As tragic as her early death was, in one way it came at the best time, as Alice had become despondent over the lack of true companionship in her marriage, and was working herself to exhaustion for her adopted country. This is an insightful biography which makes its subject and the times of her life come alive, and I recommend it highly.
