In the first part of 'Seven Citadels', Prince Kerish, pampered favorite son of the Emperor of Galkis, and his half-brother Forollkin, are sent to find seven sorcerers who each hold the key to a gate. Legend says that that the seven gates imprison a Savior, who alone can save the embattled Galkian Empire and its Godborn rulers. In the dangerous world beyond Galkis, Kerish is forced to depend on his soldier brother. The prince soon discovers something that will make their quest much more difficult-if a sorcerer surrenders his key, he also gives up immortality. When the first sorcerer turns out to be a benevolent philosopher king, the brothers begin to question whether the cost of saving Galkis is too high. 'Seven Citadels' This acclaimed quartet, set in the exotic world of Zindar, tells the story of Kerish and Forollkin, two very different brothers sent on an epic journey to save their country. Forollkin is a formidable warrior but ultimately the success of their quest will depend on Kerish's powers of insight and persuasion. As they encounter strange new cultures and confront seven immortal sorcerers, the brothers learn to question everything they thought they knew. Danger, death and love will reshape the future they are fighting for. The unique Speaking Volumes edition is the first to print the author's preferred text. It is also the first English language edition to include the vital epilogue to 'The Seventh Gate', which continues the story of Kerish and Forollkin.
Greatest book ever written (after the other volumes)

It's ironic that I bought the four books, in a bookmarket last year because they were at 1.500 escudos (what makes something like 7.5 dollars), the four of them. At the moment I was having the post-Tolkien Fantasy idolatration and that's what made me buy it, but after reading it I understood that it is much more than a mere Fantasy story, it is about people, religion, culture, mythology and the deepness of the mind itself. There's only one thing I regreet, not have read it more carefully because these is a book full of ideas, and "understandigs" of the human kind (I don't know if I should have putten these in the kids section because I'm 13 but they only let me age myself till 12 there). And another thing, if someone knows about a site or a community connected to the Seven Citadels please mail-me to mailforthe@earthlings.co.uk .
Simply cannot understand why they don't reprint it

This is the first volume in probably the most beautiful fantasy series ever, and it's out of print. The whole series is out of print, in the USA as well as in Great Britain as well as in Germany (oh, it was quite a lovely translation, which is rare enough). It simply is not fair. I have never again encountered a hero as wonderful (and handsome) as Kerish lo'Taan, and a plot that left me closer to tears. If you should manage to get these books (all four of them - and if you spend decades with searching [I took four years], it's woth the efford) - don't expect them to be funny, or happy. They don't even end happy, and hardly a fantasy series dares to do that. I did not expect it when I read it the first time, and it nearly broke my heart. It took me some years (and quite a number of bad books) to realize that »The Seven Citadels« were the fantasy cycle to leave greatest influence on my own writing, if not on my way of thinking. Life is not fair. Get used to it ...
I must have read it a dozen times.

I have never understood why only part 1 and 2 in the series were ever published in Dutch. I had to wait 5 years before I mastered english sufficiently to read part 3 and 4. Ten years on it is still my favorite story. The setting, the developing characters, the adventure and the beautiful mythology. If you ever come across it, buy it!
Possibly the best fantasy series I've ever read.

This book was the first fantasy novel I read--thirteen years (and hundreds of fantasy novels) later, it is still my favorite. The characters are complex, their development enjoyable, and the setting is unique. I do wish the author would write another novel in the series--she left the readers dangling over a precipice
Seize it with both hands if you get the chance.

Dark, sophisticated, and whimsical ... altogether, this book deserves a 10 if only for the atmosphere. But it has even more going for it: the character delineation and fascinating plot seal its appeal. Although out of print, I heartily recommend seizing it if you get the chance. It's the first of a series of four, and if your tastes run to the gothic, ceremonial, and wistful, this is something you might savor
