Primary Motive

The political process often fails some portion of society. When the failed portion becomes sizeable, an opportunity is created allowing an outsider to penetrate the established status quo. Sometimes the newcomer is waiting in the wings; at other times fate designates an unsuspecting hero to conduct the 'good fight'. Dennis Slater was an economist retiring from the university. He was not ready to take on the establishment in the forthcoming Presidential primaries. He simply wanted his ideas to be considered in the debates. His wife agreed and looked forward to early retirement when they could travel, paint, do photography and make love in exotic places. Samantha Ringles, a highly respected veteran of several national campaigns, was hired to thrust Slater and his ideas into the national spotlight. After gaining exposure, she was to abandon Slater and let him wither away into political oblivion. Her job was to promote his book and ideas. It was a simple, straightforward business deal. She did not count on infatuation, perhaps love, messing up the plan. And then there was the wife! The ever-vigilant damn wife! Also, powerful business leaders, who funded major political candidates, took note of Slater's forthcoming book and Ringles' promotional plan to push his new concepts into public view. They were not going to let radical ideas, one of which allowed taxpayers to directly influence government budgeting, to undercut their powerful hold on America. The powerbrokers decided to take swift action to eliminate the threat.
