Prima Facie

Tessa is a young, brilliant barrister. She has worked her way up from working-class origins to the top of her game: defending, cross-examining and winning. But an unexpected event forces her to confront the patriarchal power of the law, where the burden of proof and morality diverge.

Prima Facie by Suzie Miller is an award-winning play for a solo actor, taking us deep into a world where emotion and integrity are in conflict with the rules of the game. After several acclaimed productions in Australia and winning the Australian Writers' Guild Award for Drama, the play received its European premiere at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London's West End in April 2022. It was produced by Empire Street Productions, directed by Justin Martin, and starred Jodie Comer, the Emmy and Bafta Award-winning star of TV's Killing Eve, making her West End debut.

PRIMA FACIE by Suzie Miller This is the novel adaptation of the successful one woman play by the author. This was a difficult, but important story to read. Tessa Ensler has come from humble beginnings and is now a talented criminal defense barrister for the Crown Court in London, England. She has won many of her cases and she prides herself on being able to pick apart the defendant’s testimony. After she’s assaulted by a coworker, she realizes the judicial system she’s proudly serving is deeply flawed. I do have one minor caveat with the formatting as typical quotation marks and such weren’t utilized which made the story and dialogue annoying to read. Despite that, I did enjoy this book and recommend it. One in three women. Chances are *you* are the one of three. Or you know someone who is. The conviction rates in these cases are extremely low which is a heartbreakingly brutal statistic. This story has a powerful and compelling message that shouldn’t be overlooked.
