Book Overview

One of BuzzFeed's best YA books of 2021!

Perfect for fans of the Lady Janies and Stalking Jack the Ripper, the first book in the Jane Austen Murder Mysteries trilogy is a clever retelling of Pride and Prejudice that reimagines the iconic settings, characters, and romances in a thrilling and high-stakes whodunit.

When a scandalous murder shocks London high society, seventeen-year-old aspiring lawyer Lizzie Bennet seizes the opportunity to prove herself, despite the interference of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, the stern young heir to the prestigious firm Pemberley Associates.

Convinced the authorities have imprisoned the wrong person, Lizzie vows to solve the murder on her own. But as the case--and her feelings for Darcy--become more complicated, Lizzie discovers that her dream job could make her happy, but it might also get her killed.

Three of Jane Austen's classic novels receive a murder mystery makeover in this romantic and thrilling three-book series that's perfect for fans of The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy.

Pride and Premeditation is followed by Sense and Second-Degree Murder, in which aspiring scientist Elinor Dashwood and her sister Marianne, a budding detective, work together to solve the mystery of their father's murder.

A bit jarring

I spent more than a few pages trying to figure this book out at the beginning. Usually a P&P variation will be true to the period (more or less) but change outcomes within that universe OR it is set in the present day and generally follows the story and/or overall themes within a modern setting. This book did neither, or both - I'm not completely sure. I think it depends on the reader and how familiar they are with the culture and history of Jane Austen's time period, but I found some of the conflicts between period and contemporary sensibilities and events to be somewhat jarring. I'm not a purist, but I found the world the author created to be somewhat confusing, because it mixed modern and period attitudes up so much that I didn't know what was what. Also, I found Lizzie mildly annoying, putting herself and others in danger because she was so certain she was right.

Wow Wow

If you love Jane Austen and murder mysteries this is for you! I couldn’t put it down and it made me fall in love with the characters all over again! I love how the author stayed true to the characteristics of the story as well.

Sherlock Holmes meets Jane Austin

I love the original book so much, I wasn’t sure what I’d think of this.. but when I started reading it, (I couldn’t put it down) I won’t spoil anything for you. I was only upset at one paragraph (she makes it sound like Darcy is jealous of Elizabeth) but if I can read an entire book and only not like one paragraph.. I’d say it’s a great book. And when it comes to changing any one word of Jane Austin, you’ll have many people attack you.. lol Overall a great book, you have a mystery like Sherlock Holmes and all the great Characters of pride and prejudice in one book. I read this book from a library rental. Then had to buy one for my shelf. Read it, you’ll like it. It’s a clean teen read. No Sx
