Suspenseful, Engaging

I really enjoyed this book! It's part of a series written by Ms. Hunter about Dr. Rhea Lynch, who works in a small South Carolina hospital ER. All the books in the series are well-plotted and well-written. The characters are engaging, and full of depth and backstory. Ms. Hunter generates lots of suspense, maintains reader interest, and keeps the book ripping along until the end. Highly recommended!

A Worthy Sequel

In this sequel to "Delayed Diagnosis" and the second in a new line of books featuring intrepid ER physician cum sleuth Dr. Rhea Lynch, Hunter hits the mark with this fast-paced and evocative medical thriller. A rash of hate crimes have swept Dawkins County, South Carolina, leaving behind in their wake a strange pneumonia-like virus afflicting people across race and socioeconomic lines..and with a 90% mortality rate.Rhea stumbles across the epidemiological cause of the disease, but doesn't know how to treat it or how to get rid of it, other than an antibactieral cocktail she and another physician concoct. Rhea contacts Shirley, an English transport who went to med school with Rhea and her best friend Marisa (who returns from rehab very pregnant), who now works at the CDC. Together with Shirl, Rhea determines that the pneumonia is the result of a manmade streptococcus designed to be used in biological warfare. But who's behind it?It's wonderful to see Rhea again. She's a smart, funny, independent, and educated woman who could be anyone's friend. Returning also are Miss Essie and her niece Arlana, Rhea's housekeeper, albeit in a limited role. Mark and Rhea grow closer, but could a new love for Rhea be on the horizon? Shirl is a fabulous new character, and it looks like, thankfully, she'll be in future books. The only part of the novel that is a suspension of disbelief are those responsible for infecting the town. Frought with religious fervor and numerous governmental agencies, it's difficult to discern who actually did what and why. This is, however, a definite must-read for fans of Hunter and medical thrillers.

Fast Paced Medical Thriller

This is the second book featuring Dr. Rhea (pronounced Ray) Lynch. I thought the first book, Delayed Diagnosis was especially well written and I was looking forward to Prescribed Danger. I was not disappointed. Dr. Rhea Lynch is a strong and likable character. She makes a wonderful centerpiece for this tale. The medical aspect of the story is very well done. Microbiology is not always an easy subject to grasp, but Hunter does an excellent job in her descriptions of the "bugs" as well as the effect they have on the human body. There are a few red herrings in this mystery, but it all comes together in a slam bang conclusion. Some of the characters and situations from the first book are carried over into this story, so for a clear picture of the chain of events, it would probably be a good idea to read these books in chronological order. This is a well plotted, fast paced story.

"Things Aren't Always as they Seem...."

It was the sound of the cough that stopped Dawkins County, Emergency Room physician, Dr Rhea Lynch, in her tracks; "...a long moist sound. Like the sound of wet linen being torn." The interracial couple had been kidnapped, beaten, and tortured over a period of days, and found chilled and soaking in Prosperity Creek by rescue workers. Chest x-rays showed a mysterious, fast-moving pulmonary infection that was literary destroying and eating up their lungs. Within hours both were dead. Soon other victims begin showing up at the emergency room with that same distinctive cough, only to die horrible, excruciating deaths hours later, and Dr Lynch is afraid Dawkins may have an epidemic on its hands. As she, her sort-of-boyfriend, cop, Mark Stafford and the CDC race to discover the origins of this death sentence, and find a treatment or cure, they find themselves caught in the middle of a sinister, race related plot. What could white supremacist hate groups, doomsday religious fanatics, and the military have in common and is it possible that they've unleashed a bioterrorist attack on sleepy Dawkins County, South Carolina..... Fasten your seatbelt! Gwen Hunter's back, and her second installment of the Dr Rhea Lynch series is about to set you on the edge of your seat and keep you there. This is a medical thriller that has it all...an intriguing, compelling story line full of twists, turns, and vivid, riveting scenes, crisp, tense, intelligent writing, and well drawn, interesting, original characters. But it's Ms Hunter's indepth, detailed knowledge of medicine, procedures, the hospital, its staff, and the emergency room that makes this novel stand out, and adds real credibility to the story. And once you've read the first harrowing chapter, be prepared to finish this thriller in one sitting. For those new to Gwen Hunter, Dr Lynch and company, be sure to start at the beginning with Delayed Diagnois. For those who are already fans, Prescribed Danger belongs at the top of every medical thriller lover's "must read" list

It gets no better than this!

Dr. Rhea Lynch was working in an ER of a small South Carolina hospital when an interracial couple was rushed in. They had been beaten, blooded, and forcibly tattooed by a mysterious hate group. They were the first of a series of patients who had been infected with a new bacteria. A man-made bacteria! Rhea, along with her almost boyfriend and local cop named Mark Stafford, became up to their eyebrows in officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), the Naval Intelligence Service (NIS), Patriot groups, and blood-sucking media, as they fight to figure out what was going on and save lives! It doesn't take long to figure out that they are dealing with something far bigger and more terrifying than they could ever imagine! ***** If you read Delayed Diagnosis then there is no doubt in my mind you will buy this book the moment you see the name Gwen Hunter on the cover! If you have not read it, then do yourself a favor and purchase it at the same time you buy this one! Dr. Rhea-Rhea is the most sassy, intelligent, stubborn, and tenacious woman I have ever met! And I love her! Author, Gwen Hunter, has succeeded in creating a realistic little town and filling it with characters that readers can easily come to know and love. Here is a book for your "Keeper" shelf and an author that, I have no doubt, will quickly become a well known name! BRAVA! ***** Reviewed by Detra Fitch
