The novel begins in the summer of 1854 in Boston. The Logan family is considering moving to the Kansas Territory to help settle the new town of Lawrence. The New England Emigrant Aid Company is urging families to settle there to insure that the Kansas Territory is admitted into the Union as a free state. The novel follows the family across the country to Kansas City and on to Lawrence and their new home.
