The Romano-Franks first created a system of 'pounds, shillings and pence' of derived (loosely) from the Roman model where 'd' stands for denarius, 's' stands for shilling (solidus) and 'l' stands for 'libra', the Roman pound. In this system twelve denarii ('d') made one solidus ('s') and twenty solidii made one pound ('l'). So began a thousand years of coinage in Britain. This is a story of small metal tokens of value that would become crucial to the power of kings and queens, the means which paid for countless wars and battles, and the subject of intrigues, greed and envy for generations to come. This book by reknowned historical author and award-winning documentary maker Stewart Binns, takes a look at those coins that survived until the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, the monarch whose reign would see the eventual end of this currency system in favour of decimalisation.
