Some thoughtful food to savor and relish

I know some have said they were unhappy with the book being a repackaging of some of Mouw's webblog writings. When I bought the book I didn't know that. A friend had told me it had just been released and would I like to read it. I said yes after reading the author's former book "Calvinism in a Las Vegas Airport" -- which is also another great book. I will say this... I love this book... it pushes you out of your comfort zone... causing you to think hard about different issues. You might not always agree with him... but I don't think that is always the point... the point is to make you think to question to pray to ask questions to search the scriptures... to grow... to be... to be... engaged in life to reach out to live for christ. I would highly highly recomend this book to everyone... and his other book "Calvinism and the Las Vegas Airport"

"To see life steadily and to see it whole"

Mouw is a voice of orthodoxy but not "entrenchment" as he uses ordinary events of life to illustrate what a life lived for Christ means in practice. "We need to be conservative about one thing, and one thing alone," he says: "the absolute authority of God's Word. And on the basis of taking that authority with utmost seriousness, we need to be willing to call every other assumption into question." Matthew Arnold's goal, "to see life steadily and to see it whole" ties together the message of the 36 brief essays in this collection. This is a book to come back to again and again for inspiration, wisdom, and a reminder that we need to live a life "whole" for the glory of God. Mouw's focus is on Christ, but that is not just an otherworldly attitude; it includes caring for every person we meet, at the Burger King, in a cathedral in northern France, or around our own family dinner tables. If I could give this extra stars, I would, as it represents some of the finest writing I have seen in a long time. Buy the book for yourself and then get another copy or two to share with your friends.
