Prayer for Time: A Memoir

Once you have a confirmed diagnosis of cancer, you look at the world differently than before. Prayer for Time is an attempt to settle priorities before the end of life, and a reminder that what your children and friends remember about you will be a reflection of the next few month's interactions with them. Dear Lord, Thank you for this day, and for the gift of Your creation. It is early May when my wife Anne and I turn north off M-72 and head for the family cottage on Lake Skegemog. Four generations of our family have used the cottage for over forty years. Today, the shore of our 2-mile wide by 3-mile long lake appears much the same as when Mother and Dad were first attracted to this territory. The lake symbolizes the stabilizing nature of this place for our family, providing a view that's remained virtually the same over all the years we've come here. I am fighting advanced prostate cancer (APC), which occurs when the disease returns, despite the initial treatment. I know that we all must die at some point, but a true sense of urgency followed my diagnosis. I need to make clear how I want my life to bear witness among my surviving family and friends. I unpack the car and move bags of groceries, clothing, computer, printer, paper, pens and several favorite books into the cottage. My workspace is an open area on the second floor where I position my table to allow a direct view of the lake through large windows. I am ready to begin. I am home.
