Jonathan Rickert, an investigative newspaper reporter, is privy to a rumor that a most unusual group of people has established an enclave on the Oglala Lakota Reservation in South Dakota. These people are not Native Americans, are incredibly reclusive, and no one seems to know who they are or where they came from. Rickert's curiosity won't let him ignore the possibility that they might bring the realization of a reporter's dream: a scoop. His efforts at finding some answers begin with the Chief of the Lakota, but he has been sworn to secrecy except for a few generalities, none of which satisfies Rickert. Having hit a stone wall, he forgets about these reclusive people for a few years, until Rickert's arch-enemy, an employee of the ATF, leads an abortive assault on their enclave. Following that, Rickert is invited to visit their home, where he learns the truths about these people. But that leads him to discover that not everyone is so happy with their presence, and that their enemies will stop at nothing, even murder, to get rid of them. And Rickert as well.
