Practical Networking: How to Give and Get Finding Jobs

Learning of a good job opportunity is hard; getting an interview for the job is even harder; and getting the particular job could be harder than solving the "Rubik's Cube."

In other words, getting a good job is hard as hell for most of us. But where there is a will, there is a way. Start with a plan, call on your friends, find an advocate, and "gut it out." It will all come together sooner or later.

In fact, when it happens it will probably be the result of something totally unexpected and you will immediately think that finding the right job was luck. But it won't be luck. It will be because of persistence; it will be because of something a friend did or said; It will be because you're qualified; It will be because of inextricably linked circumstances that you won't be able to explain. But it won't be mere luck.

Edward Flippen has 35+ years of experience in all manner of energy regulatory proceedings, including matters concerning approval of power plants, transmission lines, affiliate and fnancing applications, as well as general and expedited rate proceedings, He served in the Office of General Counsel of the Virginia State Corporation Commission from 1975-1980, leaving the Commission in 1980 as deputy general counsel.

In Addition to his law practice, he has lectured at numerous universities in the U.S. on such topics as trade regulation at the Graduate School of Business at the College of William & Mary; economic regulation at the University of Virginia School of Law and at the Washington. He has also been a guest lecturer at Universities in Australia, Germany, France, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, and in the United Kingdom at the LSE, Cambridge and Oxford. He received his MBA and J.D. from the College of William & Mary, where he served on the Board of Visitors.

He is currently lecturer on energy regulation and policy at the University of Virginia School of Law and the Queen Mary University of London. He is also a counsel at McGuire Wood LLP. He was formerly partner of the Energy & Environmental Group.
