St. Paul makes it clear that it is desirable to have the Gift of Tongues: "5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues..." (1 Corinthians 14: 5).
Paul is saying that the gift is not just for him but for everyone, that the Gift of Tongues is desirable and that he wants everyone to speak in Tongues. In 1 Corinthians 14: 4 Paul says speaking in Tongues edifies us, lifts us up, connects us, and revitalizes us. Are you feeling worn down, lacking in energy, and spiritual power? The quickest way to re-energize is to begin speaking in Tongues. When you speak in the Spirit, you are accessing the spiritual realm, your mind is not necessary and gets left behind. You are being lifted up. You are able to leave troubles of this world behind and rest in His Spirit, the Spirit of Peace. What Paul is implying is that these Gifts are normal, natural and ordinary in a believer's life. That we, you and I, should be using these Gifts daily on a regular basis and often in our life. He even went on to compare his use of Tongues to those around him: "18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you." (1 Corinthians 14: 18).
From this scripture we can draw the conclusion, that Paul used this Gift often throughout the day, that he considered this a normal Gift and was encouraging others to use this Gift to fulfill the direction in Thessalonians: "16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." (1 Thessalonians 5: 16-19).
