Pottery Basics: Beginner Guide to Clay Techniques

By Maren H. Elwick

Discover the satisfaction of turning clay into something you made with your own hands.
Pottery Basics is a practical introduction to working with clay for anyone who wants to understand the essential skills behind handmade ceramics.
Beginning with clay preparation and fundamental forming methods, the book guides you through the process in clear, manageable stages. You'll learn how to work with clay more confidently, build sound forms, finish surfaces, and understand what happens as a piece moves from wet clay to finished ceramic ware.
BUILD A STRONG FOUNDATION
Learn the principles behind essential pottery skills, including:
- Preparing and wedging clay
- Controlling moisture while you work
- Scoring, slipping, joining, and compressing clay
- Creating pinch, coil, and slab-built forms
- Centering, opening, pulling, and shaping clay on the wheel
- Trimming and refining finished forms
- Attaching handles securely
- Adding texture and surface decoration
- Applying slip, underglaze, and glaze
- Understanding drying and basic firing principles
- Recognizing and preventing common pottery problems
PUT YOUR SKILLS INTO PRACTICE
The book includes ten approachable projects designed to help you apply the techniques as you learn:
- Pinch-Pot Trinket Bowl
- Textured Pinch-Planter
- Coil Bowl
- Coil Vase
- Slab Trinket Dish
- Slab Planter
- Hand-Built Mug
- Spoon Rest
- Wheel-Thrown Cup
- Wheel-Thrown Bowl
Each project provides an opportunity to practice important skills such as maintaining even walls, controlling shape, making secure joins, refining rims, constructing stable bases, and improving overall form.
LEARN BOTH HAND-BUILDING AND WHEEL SKILLS
Explore several ways of working with clay rather than being limited to a single method.
You'll learn how pinching develops control over thickness, how coils can create taller and more varied forms, and how slabs can be measured, shaped, and joined to create structured pieces.
The wheel section introduces the fundamental sequence of centering, opening, establishing the floor, pulling walls, shaping, cutting the piece free, and trimming once the clay reaches the appropriate stage.
UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENS AFTER MAKING
Successful pottery also depends on what happens after the form is complete.
You'll learn why controlled drying matters, how to prepare surfaces for decoration and glazing, why kiln-contact areas must remain clean, and how clay, glaze, and firing requirements need to work together.
The firing section explains essential concepts such as bisque firing, glaze firing, heatwork, and pyrometric cones while emphasizing the importance of following clay, glaze, kiln manufacturer, and studio requirements.
LEARN FROM COMMON PROBLEMS
Cracks, weak joins, warped slabs, uneven walls, collapsing forms, glaze defects, and other problems can all become useful learning opportunities.
A dedicated troubleshooting section helps you connect visible problems with possible causes, practical responses, and ways to reduce the chance of the same issue happening again.
A PRACTICAL STARTING POINT FOR WORKING WITH CLAY
Whether you're exploring pottery as a new hobby, beginning a ceramics class, or developing your skills in a community studio, Pottery Basics provides a structured introduction you can return to as your experience grows.
