Thrills, Chills and more than a few ghoulish laughs!

Susan Zoon's latest anthology, Post Crypt, is a riveting collection of short stories. Reminiscent of the comic book series, Tales From The Crypt, Post Crypt is at once, scary, ghoulish, witty, moving, ironic, imaginative and in places, downright hilarious. Zoon's prose, while highly descriptive is ultimately, plot driven. In each story, she builds the suspense to a heartstopping climax. Her characters are very well fleshed out, three dimensional and instantly recognizable. They walk among us. The author has a rare talent and an ear for depicting how ordinary people think and speak. The artistry in her writing is in how she posits these people into frightening, extraordinary and sometimes, supernatural circumstances and then observes them, in chilling detail, as all hell breaks loose. Most of the stories in the anthology are short and clip along at a furious pace, full of irony, humor, blood and dismembered body parts. A real page turner, I sped through this collection; unable to put it down. The novella, Fauna, is a fascinating, sometimes brutal and wildly romantic reminder of the power of nature and myth, and the steep price that disregarding those powers can exact. Fauna contains some of the most inspired prose I have EVER read and I found it chilling, stirring and very beautiful. The last two sentences left a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. I highly recommend this book, it is a wild ride and well worth the trip.
