Mr Deane is no stranger to the 21st century. He is not intimidated by contemporary themes, although his greatest delight, and perhaps his greatest achievement in verse is evidently poetry that is set in mediaeval times, notably his epic work, The Monastic Adventures of Polonius. This inspired work may strike the reader with its comic ambience, its jovial jeering and its ribald implications. But the reader who only recognised these qualities would rob himself of a much more moving, spiritual experience in this journey of hope and quest for salvation wherein the eponymous hero must deal with opposition from all sides, gradually winning acknowledgement for his learning and compassion, only to meet with a final betrayal in the one creature whose trust he had reason to believe he had won.
