Poseidon's Curse (Operation Poseidon)

(Book #1 in the Operation Poseidon Series)

Once again in Agamemnon's realm, Lieutenant Zach Bacon and his fire team resume discovering bits of history hidden within Greek myths. Their quest leads them to the city of Lerna and into the lair of the Hydra. The professors aboard USS Janus reveal a legendary curse by Poseidon when questioned about the anomaly of fresh water springs in the otherwise dry landscape of Argolis. Thus began a quest for cisterns deep beneath the massive walls of Tiryns, the home of Heracles. There they not only find a source of life-giving water but also experience the meaning behind Poseidon's nickname of Earth Shaker.excerpt: I can't remember whether I screamed or not. If I did, the sound was lost in the thundering of rock and water. With a wrenching, grinding roar, the steps heaved upwards, throwing me heavily into the tunnel wall. A second violent convulsion pitched me downward onto my knees, back toward the well's chamber, and I slammed the opposite wall with shoulder and chest as I toppled. Instinctively, I wrapped both arms around my head, expecting a rain of stone at any second. The earth roared and heaved again, and a heavy, struggling weight landed on me, driving the breath out of my lungs as it slid: Morgan. I twisted frantically and clutched at him to check his downward plunge: failed, and felt my forearm explode into pain and numbness as it caught the edge of a flailing boot. That quickly, he was gone, lost in the rush of cold water that surged over me. The deafening blast of the well-turned-fountain and the rumble of stone grinding against stone muted suddenly as water filled my ears and pulled me down. Fierce, churning currents seized me. I careened off stone steps and walls, losing all sense of where I was. Abruptly, my head broke the surface and I pulled in a great gasping breath. I couldn't see. My LED was gone or broken; I was lost in black darkness, spinning in the maelstrom where there had been a room and tunnel only a moment before. I struck out with my booted toes, feeling for the steps, but couldn't find them. One hand found a wall, but there were no seams or cracks for my chilled fingers, just buff faces. Dear God, where am I? Where's my buddies? The twisting currents slowed, enough for me to tread water, but I had no idea which way to swim. As the water calmed, sound died away in the chamber too. I fought down panic. I can't see anyone else's lights. I can't hear them--For a brief second, one boot sole made contact with flat stone, but I could get no purchase. I kept treading water and felt about cautiously with one arm. The wall I had felt earlier was gone. Then I reached up. Even before my arm had straightened, my fingers touched cold, wet stone. There was a sick feeling in my stomach as I realized where I was. I'm in the well's room! And--I felt the current starting to suck at me, and knew where it was headed.Down.
