Gorgeous, haunting, stellar photographs. This young man is a talent! I am usually not a fan of staged photography, but this is a whole different experience. Garlington creates and captures worlds that would otherwise go unseen. Beautiful!
A kaleidoscope of humanity, warts and all

Old, young; beautiful, ugly; fat, thin; loose, uptight. Mike Garlington captures it all. This book portrays America as it lives and loves, without prejudice and without derision. Is it Garlington's intent to make a social or racial statement? Maybe, but that's only one facet of his work. What is more important is his sense of humor and his affection for his subjects. With this body of work, Garlington proves himself to be a great humanitarian and a keen observer of the people around us that are all too often overlooked. I would call this book the most important photography book of the new millenium. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if in 10 or 20 years, Portraits from the Belly of the Whale will be considered a classic.
