Good historical reference work.

Pollard's History is a compilation by various experts (not Pollard) whose writing styles and abilities vary greatly. Coverage is erratic (one sentence on the Winchester Model 97 shotgun but 6 pages on Webley handguns) but broad. The History is strongest in 14th - 18th century firearms. This book nicely complements Small Arms of the World (1966 edition; the 1983 Small Arms is weak in WWII weaponry). My biggest complaint is the lack of illustrations. When describing in intricate detail the various lock types for black powder arms it helps to have pictures to compare them... Still, I considered this a worthwhile purchase and it filled a rather large hole in my library. A worthwhile purchase for serious students of small arms.
