Max Jarvis, an ambitious young heart surgeon, has invested his savings, his reputation, and his financial future on a state-of-the-art cardiac hospital, now under construction. All of this is put in jeopardy when he becomes involved in investigating a sex scandal that allegedly occurred years ago while he was cadet at Point of Fork Military Academy. Further problems develop when he comes into conflict with other alumni and the school's new president, whose evangelical zeal threatens to revamp the academy's culture and mission. All of this is played out against the backdrop of the school's eccentric faculty and staff. Max's rash, desperate attempts to resolve these conflicts lead to tragic and comic consequences and eventually an unexpected conclusion.
