This is a wonderful book of over two hundred poems that provide an overview of positive western philosophy. These poems are all relatively short, usually within a page, though some are longer. Their small size makes them great for a quick read to start the day. Since they are poems, and many are by masters like Emily Dickenson, Robert Browning, etc, they pack a lot of inspiration into short space. Though you can read them quickly, it really pays to think about them. I have one caveat. Even the modern poems have their roots in classic western philosophy, and that means in western religion. If you have an agnostic bent, you will need to quiet the part of your mind that is critical toward religion in order to get the most out of this cheerful book. This doesn't mean it preaches Christianity at you, nor does it mean the book is not worth it. If you tend toward the melancholy, even if you are atheistic, you can get a lot out of this book IF you take the poems as seriously as their authors did. Ms. Grant performed excellently in arranging and choosing these poems, and I am looking for other works she has been involved in. Thank you!
