I started to notice the link between image and word in my writing, mostly on Facebook posts using cell phone pictures, and then I remembered a book I have in my library, one of my favorites. It's called 'The Three Perfections' by Michael Sullivan and it's about painting, poetry and calligraphy in the classic Chinese style. That book was the inspiration for this book. They saw no difference between the poetry and the painting or to put it more precisely they saw the symbiosis between the image and the word. The brush strokes created both and in this way transformed the canvas into a multi-dimensional universe. The simplicity and directness of those lines holds a peculiar power. They were evoking both a feeling and an understanding, a landscape of familiarity and a knowing. Some kind of secret truth is released by the poetry, a door is opened. The branches part, the waters flow from the hidden spring and below the surface the reader sees the treasure clearly, not as if in a dream. It's really quite beautiful. I hope I can only do half as good.
