This is a wonderful book! I used it extensively while in graduate school to help me critique research. The book is divided into the different types of research and lists critical questions to ask when reading each type of research. It also explains why you must ask these questions and does so concisely. This book is small, light and easy to carry around.
Discriminating a good paper from a waste of paper

The number of papers published in health sciences journals, even within a single specialty far exceeds any reader's ability to keep up. Worse still is that a majority of the published papers are not worthy of having any impact on one's approach to patient care. Crombie's book cannot help one solve the first problem but it is a great asset in solving the second, determining if a paper should have an impact on the way one practices. The book presents in an easy to read style what crucial questions need to be answered to determine if a published study provides valid information from which to make clinical decisions. There are check lists for all the major clinical research methodologies. I highly recommend this book for students in the health sciences and for practitioners who may need to brush up on their skills of critical appraisal of the published literature.
