Pocket Factfiles Mammals

What's the difference between a sea lion and a seal? Are buffalo and bison the same thing? How long do bears hibernate? Are porcupines dangerous? Spanning the diverse realm of mammals, this informative volume includes sections on carnivores, sea mammals, primates, large herbivores, small mammals, and marsupials and monotremes. Find out how large carnivores such as lions and cheetahs, as well as smaller animals such as weasels and otters hunt for food. A brief introduction answers the general question of what makes a mammal, and a glossary ensures that everything is understood.

Surprisingly Nice Little Book!

This is not an exhaustive resource on animals, nor does it have lots of colorful, interesting pictures, but that is not it's purpose. It is a small, pocket-sized volume that gives a glance at over a hundred different animals, and some unusual ones at that(civet, meerkat, narwhal, langur, tapir, and quokka among others)! Each page has at least one photo or illustration of the animal, and a picture showing the region of the globe the animal inhabits, then gives basic information about the animals' distributions, sizes, appearances, diets, breeding, and lifestyles. The book has a complete table of contents, and is also pretty well indexed, so that finding animals is relatively easy. Please note that the author writes from an evolutionary perspective, so evolutionary dating is mentioned at least in the first couple of pages that describe how animals are classified as mammals and their history. The animals are loosely grouped according to lifestyle, but scientific classifications are included as well. This is a great volume for those who want an overview of lots of different kinds of animals, or who are looking for enough information to know whether to research an animal further.
