After my son received his appointment to the USNA, I have been rather voraciously consuming the fiction about being a midshipman. I've read books such as A Sense of Honor and The Return of Philo Magee, and several others. The Plebe trilogy truly stands out from the crowd. As you read this book, you actually feel like you are there, experiencing I-day, going through plebe summer and plebe year. It is a compelling read, hard to put down as you are anxious to find out what is going to be done to these young men next. The book is not without flaws, however. It appears to be self-published, which means that it has quite a few very distracting typos, whether awkward grammar or the occasional misplaced (or just plain missing) word. It would benefit immensely from the hand of a good editor. On the other hand, being self-published, my copy came signed by the author, a rather nice bonus, though that makes reading it hard as you want to keep the book in good condition. Of all the fiction about the midshipman experience I have read, this is the one book I would call the "must read", particularly for a prospective mid. Definitely worthwhile.
Much more than Title Indicates

This book was truly more than the title would indicate. I felt it would only be descriptive of life at the Academy but it is so much more. It's the Academy, its traditions, plus the lives and tribulations as seen through the eyes of three young men of very different backgrounds. Their stories reflect the strength of character, loyalty and integrity that the plebe experience fosters. After reading this novel, I can understand why Naval Academy graduates are so well respected.
