Kate is experiencing the worst year of her life. She and her children have just come from an intervention for her husband Steve. His controlling and abusive behavior toward her and their two children was destroying the family. Steve was issued an ultimatum that included changing his bad behavior, and getting some therapy to help him do that. If he didn't agree, Kate would obtain a divorce. Recently Kate herself has been seeing a therapist. Her therapist, Ruth, was just what she needed to help her deal with all the other things that were contributing to the worst year of her life. Her two children, Amy and Michael were nearly grown now and were thinking of their own futures. Leaving home and going far far away were part of their plans. The empty nest syndrome was scaring Kate and making her sad. She was afraid that being alone with Steve, she might return to making excuses for him, like she had been doing for the past twenty two years. Her children had convinced her that she needed to do something for herself. That had brought reality to the situation, and that is just what she was afraid of losing by being alone with Steve. Kate had long been estranged from her parents, but her father had recently gotten in touch, to let her know that her mother was dying. This in turn brought up long ago memories of a controlling and abusive mother, and a childhood full of fear. Things she had buried inside her and never dealt with. Now, through counseling, she was finding out how to deal with each situation and how her past had controlled her future.Kate's story is told during monthly sessions with Ruth, her therapist. Ruth's voice in written in bold face type and italics. Kate's voice is written in regular type face.
