Jake and Emily are fourth graders at Lincoln Elementary. On a visit to the city library, they discovered a time machine in a hidden closet. This is their fifth adventure, traveling to the late 1800s to visit Alexander Graham Bell. The kids meet him and find that he is very discouraged and thinking of giving up trying to invent the telephone. He has had repeated failures and the townspeople were making fun of him. The kids convince him that the telephone is vital for the future and get him to promise to continue. Upon getting home, the kids discover and unpleasant surprise, prompting a return to Mr. Bell.
