I recently returned from Ireland where a friend turned me on to Rory McCormac's first mystery thriller featuring Frank Samson, a veterinarian (like McCormac) who turns investigator when a prize thoroughbred horse suffers a tragic "accidental" death. McCormac's writing is brisk and humorous and doesn't get bogged down in procedural details, though you'll learn more about veterinary practice than you knew before. The writing and the subject matter are reminiscent of Dick Francis in his heyday, but McCormac doesn't take himself quite so seriously, which only results in a better, more enjoyable read. It's too bad that there are only 3 books in this series, so let's hope that more are in the offing.
