The chess pieces in an old chess set revolt. They are family, carved from the same tree, and they don't like battling each other so they start falling over when they are placed on the board. They are then given to a little girl who keeps them in her playroom along with her other toys. The chess pieces plan a party to celebrate their new life, but two of their important pieces end up missing the party. Nursery rhyme characters hop out of books to join in the celebration. The themes of ancestry and relationships and changes in family roles show up as the story unfolds, asking the questions, WHO DID YOU USED TO BE? and WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR PLACE IN A GROUP, IF YOU ARE GONE FOR A WHILE?
