This volume contains experiments that are designed so that the adult can lead a young child through the simple steps and help out as necessary. It includes broad coverage of science topics in a style that is easy for young children to understand. Each science topic is introduced with a simple I wonder question that the young child might ask, such as I wonder why balls bounce and I wonder why eggs don't break under a chicken. The experiment then helps the child find the answer for himself. Complete scientific explanations are provided in an appendix that adults can refer to if they think their child would be interested.
I am a science teacher and I absolutely adore the Janice VanCleave science series. It is HIGHLY appropriate for the early childhood set. Every topic starts out with a question: i.e. I wonder why hair is curly and straight... And then it leads you through a very age appropriate/simple experiment and a few enrichment activities... Each topic then ends in a very short explanation... The book has illustrations and each question is maybe 3 pages long total, before it goes on to another question. I HIGHLY reccomend it as the BEST science series that I know of for young children. Experiences are the best science learning tools for this age.. more than reading non-fiction and such, although that has benefits as well.. Buy these books!!
Super Series for Introducing Your Children To Science!

I LOVE this book by Janice Van Cleave! I came across it while looking through a homeschooling catalog and decided to purchase a copy for our homeschool. The book is divided into eight sections: Before You Begin, Air, Changes, Magnets, Forces, Light, Sound and Electricity. In each section are a group of simple science experiments for parent and child to do together. Both parent and child will enjoy learning about scientific principles in a fun, hands on format. There are other books in this series which I would recommend, "Play and Find Out About Nature, Play and Find Out About Bugs, Play and Find Out About the Human Body, Play and Find Out About Math." After completing this series I would recommend moving on the the Janice Van Cleave books "Science for Every Kid" series.
