Book Overview

This illustrated study provides comprehensive coverage of plant breeding systems. At the levels of both the individual plant and of the plant population, genetic variation and evolutionary change are ever-present, and it is clear that they are heavily influenced by plant mating patterns.;The breeding system is considered as part of an overall adaptive syndrome that influences, and is influenced by, microevolutionary constraints. Pollination biology, gene flow, incompatibility, variation in gender, heteromorphic systems, self-fertilization, and asexual reproduction can all be important components of a breeding system. Introductory chapters place these in the context of sexual theory and sexual function.

A fundmental book for plant reproductive biology

This book offers a complete and a fundamental overview of plant breeding systems by using shallow and clear language that it is easy to understand and follow. I would say it is an essential textbook for students who have biological, genetic, and evolution backdrops want to study plant reproductive biology. There are eleven chapters in this book and are edited to go from the easy to the difficult and complicated. The author brought up ample important hypotheses, principles, theories and broad viewpoints over the years of each topic. He interpreted and discussed every example and case elaborately and objectively. There are also well-arranged figures and pictures in black and white. The author talked about advantages and disadvantages of various plant breeding systems based on evolution and genetics points of views heavily. Although there are numerous difficult professional terms, the author not only elucidated those terms right after mentioning about them, but also concluded a complete glossary in this book.
