The strange, white-robed character of Teacher surfaces once again, like a bad penny. His intent is to extort the authorities by staging a bizarre series of 'testings', aided by his powers of hypnotism and faith in his gods. "On this the first week of your "testings", you will be minded preventing a calamity befalling Clearwater town. As the Lord said unto Moses, stretch out thine hand towards heaven, that there may be darkness over the land, a darkness that may be felt for three days and nights." Teacher is challenged of course, by a police team headed by Detective Sergeant Sally Reid, an undercover cop, who pitted her wit against him when he first appeared in Volume 1. This face-off results in challenges to the 'testings', chases, undercover plots and counter plots with a twist a mile wide. What are Teacher's reasons for such grand extortion? How will Sally stop him, having failed before? Will the twist in the tale provide what the twister is looking for? Being the second book in the "Teacher" trilogy, this quirky and humorous episode can be read as a stand-alone story or in conjunction with the first book, "At the Back of My Mind".
