Childhood wartime memoirs

Hilda Hollingsworth and her two sisters (Roberta and PAt) were among the hundreds of thousands of evacuee children forced to leave London at the beginning of the Second World War. In this richly evocative narrative, by turns amusing and heartrending , Hollingsworth illustrates how she and her sister Pat were billeted to different households , and schools. Here she meets her friends , the dauntless and loudmouthed Winnie , Jessica , Joyce and Connie. From a posh household in Kent to the warm welcoming Auntie Vi and further on to a harsh and grubby Welsh mining village , were she was tormented by the sadistically smiling Joneses with their cruel cat and mouse games.
