All the best rolled into one motivating action plan

I read a lot of self-help, motivational books, and write them, myself. Alan's is cream-of-the-crop. One reviewer notes that it's "recycled" info. Yes, it is all the best---distilled into a single book. Alan's best technique is to conclude every chapter with a detailed, practical, "what to do now" action summary. Follow his plan, and you can't miss. I agree with every single recommendation he makes, and enjoy his writing style. It's personal and real, and NOT boastful. I dislike name-dropping, "look what I overcame" authors who want to impress readers with their sob story turnarounds. Alan's isn't like that. He has made his own "pivots" and shares exactly how he did it so you can learn from his example and do it yourself. I found the book tremendously helpful. George Walther, Speaker Hall of Fame [...]

A valuable entry into the realm of "positive psychology," this commendable book offers an engaging look at the power of a positive attitude. Although the book looks like the typical self-help hardback, it is really also a workbook in disguise. Each chapter has a discussion of the issues most relevant to developing self-affirming, enthusiastic attitudes that lead to success in any endeavor. There are numerous apt examples, quotations and stories as well as many references to other authors, teachers and philosophers from over millennia whose works have offered the same critical message as Dr. Zimmerman. Each chapter has not only a description of what to do and why, but also -- and this is where it is revealed that the book is really a workbook -- exercises at the end to allow the reader to put new knowledge into practice. What I liked best, though, is the author's upbeat treatment of his subject. I found myself chuckling at his humor throughout the book. There is a laugh to be had on every second page. He has an excellent teaching style -- a reader is more likely to remember and learn from something that also entertains. Dr. Zimmerman's instructions are solid. He is simple, clear and precise about what is important to consider and what is important to do. And however simple the suggestions seem, they are what many psychotherapists tell their clients to try. People who've tried them tell me they work very well.
