Product Description

Marooned space-travelers struggle for survival on seemingly lifeless sun-scorched world. But when a titanic eclipse throws the planet into darkness, the world erupts with nocturnal life - and now the real battle begins... A crippled passenger ship crashes on a planet that has, seemingly, no other life and no periods of night. Among the survivors are JOHNS, a police officer ...RIDDICK, an escaped killer whom Johns is escorting back to prison ...and CAROLYN FRY, a docking pilot who feels responsible for the many lives lost in the crash landing. When night falls for the first time in 22 years, the planet turns lethal, erupting with nocturnal creatures. Danger comes from within the group of stranded survivors as well: Fry learns that Johns is a drug-addled bounty hunter instead of a cop, and Riddick seems to be plotting his own escape, angling to be the only human to get off the planet. With make-shift lights as their only weapon, the survivors must race from the crash site through a treacherous canyon - - confronting predators and their own personal fears to reach the ship, which is their only hope of escape.

The formula is predictable, and yet fun to watch.

You do not want to know too much about this movie ahead of time, as the few places that are not predictable are all that it has. Here are all the standards: space rocks break ship, crash decisions, the survival of the ditziest. Throw in a few bug-bats, other obscure toothy critters, and stick your head in a hole. To make this movie unique and give it a name, you throw in "Pitch Black" darkness caused by (watch the movie and find out). Not to sound snide, but it is clear that a lot of time and money went into the project. They had to pick exotic Australian locations for the planet scene (thank goodness it was not Mars again). Those Vin Diesel eyes were experimental metal contacts. The orrery was a cute touch amid the otherwise high-tech atmosphere. There is plenty of action, and even the obligatory waiting to be surprised did not drag on. If this is a shoot-um-up movie and an "and then there were none" movie, it is done well. If it was supposed to be a sci-fi movie, which should have a moral to it, then it was lost in the shoot-'em-up scenes.
