Novel with a purpose

Reviewed by Susan Pettrone for Reader Views (4/07) Angelina never dreamed that a seemingly boring voyage on her father's ship, the "Angelina Star," would be a voyage which would change her life forever. Visiting her grandparents was a special treat for Angelina as we learn in the prologue, for visiting them meant traveling from her new home in Florida back to Spain where they resided. But to Angelina, the trip was worth it for she loved them very much and enjoyed being so close to her mother's family. But the voyage was not to be the usual voyage, one of open seas and long days. It became one filled with frightening moments, pirate's abduction and being held against her will in the palatial estate of one of the worst pirates of the time, Etienne Badeau. Angelina caught the eye of Badeau when the boarded the Angelina Star, and from that moment on, he was determined to make her "his" no matter what the cost, and no matter how long it took. But Badeau had no idea that he wasn't the only man who loved Angelina, for a sailor on her father's ship, Brian, was bound and determined himself to keep Angelina safe from the pirate Badeau. Passing himself off as a translator for Badeau, Brian makes himself indispensable to the pirate. After all, if the pirate couldn't communicate with Angelina, how could he win her heart? Interestingly enough, Brian serving as a translator really was not needed, as Angelina could speak fluently in French as well as Spanish. Instinctively knowing that Brian would keep her Aunt Elena and herself safe, Angelina wisely goes along with the ruse, fooling Badeau and giving hope to what might have been a hopeless situation had Brian not been there with her. What transpires next in the book is a mixture of suspense, love story, adventure, intrigue and, of course, heroic rescue for the captured young woman and her Aunt. Also within this book is a message of hope and spiritual faith that is written in such a way as not to be blatant or "preachy" but rather matter of fact, blending well into the story and serving as a wonderful part of the characters within the book. As a reader, I found this a refreshing change from usual romances in that instead of your run-of-the-mill love story, the love that was presented was love based in faith and caring and not unlikely scenarios or fantastic situations or flowery text as is so often found in romance novels today. The addition of Angelina's strong faith is what draws all the elements of this story together and what ultimately makes the outcome satisfying for the reader as well. I would highly recommend "Pirate's Prize" for readers of all ages who are searching for a novel that has a purpose behind it's storyline as well as for those readers who enjoy novels with faith being the prevalent strength behind the characters.
