In 1845, the American merchant ship "Friendship" was attacked and sunk by Malayan pirates. Aboard were five British subjects--young girls sailing to the new Hong Kong colony to marry men to whom they had been betrothed. The Malayan's plan for the Calcutta Five, as they were dubbed by the media, was to ransom two, auction two as harem slaves, and keep one in bondage for their rajah. This was foiled by the East India Company who, appalled by the piracy and the abductions, would stop at nothing to retaliate. The Victorians" is the story of the Calcutta Five and the attempt to rescue them from perdition.
