Yes, Please.

When all too often the poetry section is full of people who no longer speak your language, finally, glory. Rachel McKibben's book is a welcome startle. I read her book 'Pink Elephant' cover to cover the first time I opened it and was haunted by it for weeks. It is the rare kind of terror told well enough that you believe she knows you, that you believe a voice has come to tell all your subtleties and wants. I wholeheartedly loved this author's work.

Rachel McKibbens writes the kind of poetry that others try to imitate. Ms. McKibbens is a slam champion but don't hold that against her-- she is an original voice-- quite unlike most of what you saw on Def Poetry Jam. This poet has a cult following because she writes great poetry--the kind that makes the transition from the stage to the page seem effortless. This is a Very Big Deal.

Rachel McKibbens has some of the sharpest vision on this earth. In terms of influences from the "canon", I'd put her closest to Anne Sexton and Sylvia Plath. As far as more contemporary work, I'd say she's comparable to Sharon Olds. I'm lucky enough to have seen several chapbooks of hers over the years, and I've been waiting for a full-length collection to come take my breath away. It has. Rachel McKibbens is a god damn professional at writing poems. With so many contemporary voices staying in comfort zones of whimsy, or form, or the external, political landscape, it is a particular victory to see someone commit to their work as a deliberate exploration of personal truth.

Beautiful

Rachel's work never ceases to sucker punch me in the gut. Each word, every turn of phrase is so carefully placed on the page. It's as if she didn't just WRITE these poems, it's like she DESIGNED them. I have yet to read or hear a poem by her where I've walked away the same as I was before. If you're looking for work that will leave you slack-jawed and panting, you've found it. This is not your grandma's poetry.
