Pine snakes are large, fairly heavy-bodied snakes. They have a small head that looks like a turtle's and a pointed snout that goes over the jaw. They can be yellow, white, or light gray, and from the head to the tail, they have dark, squarish blotches. In contrast to other snakes, which have smooth scales, theirs are rough to the touch and are called keeled. They are restricted to a single anal plate and have keeled scales with approximately 27 to 37 rows.
