This is a concise book on the origin and operation of the first transcontinental air route under Post Office auspices. It is based on the reprint of a manual of instructions for air mail personnel. Otto Praeger, Second Assistant Postmaster General, in charge of the air mail, directs "all employees of the Air Mail Service will be required to familiarize themselves with the information relating to the section of the route with which they are concerned."(48) Historian William M. Leary, in his introduction, places the primary source document in context. The instructions describe the route mile by mile. Through the marvel of modern technology and Google Earth, it is possible to "fly" the route as the aviator would have in 1921! The small size of early airfields is amazing. They were barely a few hundred feet in any direction and advisories caution of trees or high tension wires on the approaches!
