Turn adversity to advantage for yourself and others.

How do you turn adversity to advantage for yourself and others? How do you get what you truly want in any negotiation? What inner power do we all have that fosters fearlessness, cooperation, and promotes understanding? How do we cultivate that power? Amazing as it may seem, I found the answers to all those questions in Julian Gresser's book, Piloting Through Chaos. How I discovered this remarkable book, is in itself, a good story. I was having lunch here in Seattle with Barry Foreman, a prominent venture capitalist. "Companies whose products and services can change the world for the better," he said, "are the ones that most interest me." I told Barry about my dream of promoting understanding. "And how would you do that, Carol?" "Through knowledge," I answered, "...that empowers people for the good." "My friend, Julian Gresser, who lives in the Bay area, has written a wonderful book and developed unique software that contains such knowledge." "What are they about?" I asked. "A new way of negotiating," he answered, quickly adding, "...it's quite remarkable. I think you're going to agree," Barry paused, "You may even have an interest in working together. He decided to find out why. He discovered that Western academic models of negotiation, which were developed primarily by law professors interested in settling conflict, were too concerned with reaching a static agreement, and relied too heavily on compromise. In contrast, the Japanese players viewed negotiation as a continuing and unending navigational process--there is always another river to ford or a new mountain to climb; in business, one is never out of the game. And the ancestry for the game's moves and counter-moves was the strategies and tactics of samurai warriors. Disabling opponents' integrity--the capacity of every human being to be connected, coherent, whole, and adapatively vital--had proved effective in the twelfth century and was still highly effective seven hundred years later! Julian began to devise ways in the negotiation process for his clients to protect and strengthen their integrity. He encouraged them to focus their energy on what they could actually manage--their own fears, attitudes, and actions--and use even casual situations as an opportunity for practice. There was a dramatic turnaround. His clients began scoring wins, often in what ap
