John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress was for a long time the second most popular book in the world after the King James Bible. A well-deserved placing, for it is a great spiritual classic.
Here is the full story in a form that has been specially adapted for the Christian reader today. It retains the traditional language and quaint mannerisms associated with a book published three and a half centuries ago, yet has the commentary and explanations interspersed to make it edifying and easily digested and understood today.
The original has been translated into more than 200 languages and has had a major impact on such writers as C. S. Lewis, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain and John Steinbeck. The great hymn, 'To be a Pilgrim' is based on this book. Yet the allegory only came about because Bunyan was confined to a Bedford prison.
