so much fun

Talking about teaching expressive reading! This fun story and even funnier illustrations make reading for my 1st grader a blast. We own all Piggie and Elephant books for that reason. Thanks Mr. Willems!

Elephant Pig Friendship

This unassuming little book starring a cheery little pig and a pessimistic pachyderm has quite a few positives going for it. It has cute, lovable characters, and uncomplicated plot, and charming illustrations. I like that the author keeps it simple with a limited vocabulary bank and pages uncluttered with busy graphics. My very young students like this book, a book that offers many opportunities for discussion and inference questions: Why is pig sneezing? Why is elephant happy to be sick? Why is elephant crying? Why is pig lying on his back? The cover is a great starting point for discussion and predictions. I like that even both inside covers are filled with related graphics that can be viewed for enjoyment or even some counting practice. Looking for an appropriate book about friendship and the spread of germs? Pigs Make Me Sneeze with its entertaining story and emotive characters is a good choice for your beginning reader.

Pigtastic

My family loves Mo Willems and we especially love the Elephant and Piggie books. Pigs Make Me Sneeze does not disappoint. It is as wonderful as all of the others and we eagerly await Mo's new work.

Perhaps one of the best for read-alouds

As a teacher, I adore these books. They are hilarious early readers that manage the magic combination of easy decodable and sight words along with lovable characters and funny plots. Each book makes me laugh and shake my head in wonder of where Mo Willems gets these psychotic ideas. This one, while not my absolute favorite, deserves particular acclaim for a wide range of emotion that works well for a read-aloud (the fact is that Gerald naturally gets the best voice, I can't explain it).

It just makes me smile

If you're already familiar with the series pretty much all you need to know is that it's as good as ever. Not to worry, Mo Willems hasn't let us down. For the rest - the Elephant and Piggie books are designed for young readers but they're fun to read to an even younger kid too. They're funny, with sparse but nice illustrations. The author plays with language in a way that's very enjoyable to read and presumably also educational. Good stuff. Unless you're specifically looking for a reader you might want to start with the books aimed at younger audiences - Knuffle Bunny especially, but these are quite enjoyable.
