I was captivated from the opening paragraph and loved reading this novel so much I had to force myself to put it down to avoid reaching the end all too soon. The structure and composition of the book is a work of art in itself, her words are put down as careful brushwork that paint intimate character portraits, laying bare each characters hidden experience as the story unfolds... breathtaking and beautiful. Whilst this book appears to be marketed under the catagories of 'chic lit' and 'summer read', I feel this greatly underestimates this author's appeal. Elmor's novel offers the reader a work of far greater depth and significance. What sets this novel apart from other similar novels is the handling or process of the narrative which takes place in the past and present simultaneously and is pieced together into a slowly evolving portrait that comes into focus within the reader's mind. The three perspectives, the painter, her mother and the mysterious girl trapped within the landscape of the council estate, all adjoin to give a deeply moving story of what it means to be or become a mother and how the past impinges upon the present. What I feel extrodinary about Jane Elmor's writing is her creation of a sense of time and space that flows through the dialogue between characters... many writers are content to stop at simply capturing their main characters narrative/impressions of situations. Elmor creates a text that breathes with unspoken desires, captures something of the collective and unconscious experience that runs through peoples' encounters with each other... her beautifully crafted narratives have a life all their own.
