Jack Munro must be the most unlucky man in Durango. Telling a lie about finding a gold mine to a one-eyed man known as Patch has gotten him killed. He escapes him one night by jumping off a steam locomotive but manages to live long enough to tell part of the story to Peter, a man out for a walk. He gives a gold nugget the size of a walnut to him and asks that he take it to Kelli his niece. Now Patch thinks they know where the gold mine is. Peter and Kelli end up leaving Durango for Albuquerque to meet an old Native American on the square. Peter senses that he can perform a ceremony and remove Patch from their lives. Peter can talk to animals so from that point on every move they make to escape is orchestrated by a seeing eye dog, a squirrel a rabbit a coyote a hawk and an owl. This is a funny karmic romp across three states where getting chased and shot at, a nearly naked sweat lodge treatment to remove a curse and animals that Peter can talk to become routine. Peter and Kelli cling to their sanity and each other in their attempt to outrun Patch and escape the end Jack met.
