PIC in Practice is a graded course based around the practical use of the PIC microcontroller through project work. Principles are introduced gradually, through hands-on experience, enabling students... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This is by far the best reference I've ever seen for microprocessors. Some people can learn abstractly; however, I think anyone would agree the best way to learn to do something is to do it for yourself. That is the basis of this book. I have taken several classes on microprocessors and ran into a problem I couldn't resolve when I picked up this book. I did a few example programs for myself, based on the subject, and now the problem is solved. Not only can this book help those that see microprocessors once in a blue moon review quickly but it can teach those that have been around them awhile better methods of doing things.
2006 Edition, EXCELLENT, I wish I had found this book 10 years ago

I wish I had had this book 10 years ago. It would have saved me thousands of hours ploughing thru badly written books, incomprehensible data sheets and dealing with the obstacle course at Microchip's website. This is simply the best book on using PIC technology. He gets down to writing a simple program on page 11. He also deals with headers on page 14. Most PIC books ignore this vital step. He also uses Plain English. Microchip Technolgy and other publishers ought to buy a copy for all their people to show them that you don't have to bury simple facts under a thick layer of techno-crap He introduces a few instructions in each chapter. In fact most programs in the real world do not use more than 20 different instructions. He deals with counting, timing, keypads, alphanumeric displays, A-D conversion, radio control and interupts in a way that puts most big expensive books to shame. He only uses PIC 12 and 16, not PIC18, but that is enough for most projects. I find the 16F877 will do most jobs and it comes as a 40 pin DIL. The main obstacle to using PIC18 are the bloated, unreadable books and data sheeets. He uses the Picstart programmer, which does not have a USB input. It uses a serial port, which is not available on most laptops. You need a serial-to-USB adapter. Better still use the ICD2 instead of the Picstart. It does not affect using the book and also gives debug feauture. I hope he uses it for the next edition. Congratulations D W Smith.

OUTSTANDING book! After reading PIC in Practice, you can read ANY assembly code! This book is very easy to understand. It is written as though the author is talking directly to you. Each topic is explained in three different ways using real-world examples. Great explanation of each instruction code. Like a great novel, all projects in come together at the end of the book. It gives you a "warm fuzzy" of understanding. PIC in Practice makes a great reference and is written for the beginner to advance reader. I hope to find more books by Mr. Smith.
you must buy this book when you want to program pics in assembly language

PIC in practice review

Well done D.W.Smith!, this book is well laid out and easy to understand. Mr Smith has not presumed any prior PIC knowledge from the reader, except a good understanding of electronics. Describing basic PIC functions initially & with plenty of practical applications early on & then going onto describe why it works. There is no heavy technical 'jargon' early on which all of my other 5 PIC books are guilty of. I only wish that this book had been available 2 years ago when I migrated from amateur electronics logic circuits to PIC micros. My first 5 PIC books by other authors have done nothing but made the learning process an upward struggle. Highly recommend this for your starter / average PIC enthusiast. Not for the very experienced. Well done again.
