A thrilling read for one who was actually there at the time

From one who was at PHU BAI, Trai Bac Station at the time covered in the book. I was thrilled by the writing style of the author. How he took actual people who were there and created "fictional" characters for the story was great. The use of many actual incidents that occurred and the actual layout of the buildings and infrastructure of the station as well as the inclusion of the mortar and rocket attacks we endured, especially during the TET offensive were incredibly memorable. true or false???

I wonder if the author wrote this novel based on fact or fiction? i rememeber a group of ASA soldiers who "lost it" after working many many hours in the communication center...I think those guys were in the central highlands area of Vietnam. What did the gov't do with men who 'snapped' like this? very little... some mental health care and then a quick medical discharge... As a past member of ASA and RR i think the author has done a great job on both his novels. i would highly recommend this book..... the listening post work was far more important to the war effort than what most REMF's did.... ASA had the ability to do Direction Finding of radios. It was hard to find Sir Charles, the communists out in the jungles and forests. When they used a field radio the triangulators and direction finders were able to "find' them... very effective way of keeping VC honest. keep the faith.

Definitely not the same old thing!

Although this book is not my usual literary fare, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The pace was exciting. The plot was original with a surprising outcome. The characters were well developed in an interesting fashion. The author presented a deeply realistic picture of the Vietnam war from the inside. I never expected to enjoy a book that even had the word war in it, yet I found myself truly caring for the characters, immersed in the realistic background and fascinated by the plot twist. I am looking forward to hearing more from the main character in future books!
Tension of Vietnam war behind murder mystery
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 21 years ago
The murder mystery itself is well-written with an interesting plot, attention to detail, and good character development - nevermind the turn in the story that takes both the reader and investigator by surprise! The backdrop is the height of the Vietnam War with all the tension and realism that only someone (like the author) who served could deliver. In fact, it felt as though the reader was there and in the middle of the action! It all makes for a fast-moving story, a good Sunday read!
