great photography book

I am an amateur horse photographer. This book was THE BEST thing ever, to help me make great horse photos. My photos are now better than most of the "professional" ones, because of this book. Most "horse" photographers don't use right focal length of lens, don't properly position the horse to bring out his best conformation, they make the head look abnormally large and ugly. With this book and a good camera, I am able to make excellent horse pictures. This book is a "must have" for horse photographers. It doens't have anything about electronic photography, just basic photography skills, framing the photo, getting the animal to look his best, etc. He also shows you how to make good photographs of other livestock, like cattle, etc. Thanks Mr. Darol Dickenson, the author of this book!

Excellent reference

Professional photographers often take very bad photos when it comes to horses and livestock. This is an invaluable guide to shooting animals...with tips and tricks to maximize your time with subjects that "tilt your head a little forward" does not work on! Whether you use digital or "old fashioned" cameras the advice on posing animals, *WHERE* to shoot and showing how sometimes even the best of photographers get help to create a stunning shot. If your subject is a little too thin or a little too fat you'll learn how to shoot to somewhat hide this. WELL worth the money! While it focuses on horses and cattle the same principles apply to hogs, sheep, goats and other livestock. If you have a hard time finding someone to capture your animals in more than just snapshots, get this book. With a little practice, a truckload of patience and a decent camera, those far out of range of professional livestock photographers can get passable, useful photographs to promote their animals and farm. With cropping and photo technology programs now that were not a dream when this was written it's a valued guide.

Excellent advice from top photographer

Mr. Dickinson is the photographer of many extremely well known horses - you will recognize his style immediately. His work has been featured in AQHA, APHA, Appaloosa, Rodeo, etc. This compact book was written before the digital camera but it does not matter - his thorough knowledge of horse photography is set down in uncomplicated text and photos. It is amazing how concise his advice is - and he uses up to 3 photos to illustrate his expertise. You can immediately see why you should change an angle, or time of day. Hard to find book - I have a lst edition which is priceless to me.
