Molestation of boys and adolescents of African descent is such taboo that it is rarely the victim who steps forward to say what's been done to him. In a culture where The Church and its leaders are trusted implicitly, many, among the few who are brave enough to speak up, are often dismissed as troubled, misguided or simply untruthful. So consequently, most abusers will never see the inside of a courtroom, jail, or mental health facility. Society's Failure to identify or prosecute offenders doesn't make the acts of incest, molestation, sexual abuse, physical and psychological abuse any less criminal. Lack of physical proof doesn't mean the pain is any less real, or the spirit any less broken. The Truth! is sometimes hard to swallow. However, the reality is that even the abuser has a story that is not only worth telling, but sometimes essential to our understanding. After we've forgiven, after we've stopped blaming ourselves, sometimes understanding is the last obstacle to healing. The beauty of fiction is that the writer has the freedom to speculate and hypothesize about the mysteries of the universe. Michael Anthony Lawson is a a beautiful figment of my imagination. And while a great deal of his disturbing past has indeed been mirrored in the headlines, blogisphere, and back rooms of many southern religious institutions, the rate to which his story is typical, as well as the duration of the abuse, are an intentional exaggeration. What is not exaggerated is the damage done and the hell that he and other abuse victims must trudge through to get back what was taken.
