Read it in a day...

... and then reread it. Aimee Carter creates a world that is similar to our own, but with one very important difference - how many of us have the same dream every night, with a mysterious man who seems to know a great deal about our lives and offers us advice? Not many, I'd wager, but such is the case for Zac Lucas, the protagonist of 'Phoenix Ashes' and the following two as-of-yet unpublished novels in the trilogy. We meet Zac at age six - an orphan who is tormented by his bullying cousin, Blake, and ignored by his wealthy uncle Robert, but finds allies in his friend Elizabeth and later his aunt Alexa - not to mention Minty, who appears in his dreams every night. We watch him get older, and eventually spiral into despair when events in his life threaten to overwhelm him. A powerful read, offering up opinions on life, death, faith, love, morality and friendship, as well as being just plain enjoyable and engaging.

Wow!

Aimee uses great description to create a remarkable story. I loved her book! It is the story about a boy named Zac who is faced with the troubles of growing up. In between his search to find himself and his problems with his cousin and uncle, he discusses his life with Minty, a man who comes in his dreams. It is left up to the reader to decide whether or not Minty is real. This novel is very creative and anyone who remembers what it's like to be a teenager will love it. I can't wait for the next book in the series! What is so amazing, is that Aimee wrote this when she was only 15!

If you were ever a child you'll love it

This story will take your emotions on a rocket ride. At times you will cry for the main character, Zac. Other times you will want to grab him by the neck. But, in the end, you will love this screwed up little kid that reminds you of someone you have known all your life. The best part is that its only the first book in the series!

wow...

Speechless is the only way I can describe how I felt after I read this book. I received it at noon, and didn't stop reading it until I had finished it that night at 9pm. It was beautifully written (even more so because it was a teenager who wrote it) and incredibly deep; there were many morals and ideas going in every direction. I connected to this book in a way I have never connected to anything else before, and by reading Phoenix Ashes, I reevaluated parts of my life I had never previously even thought about. The characters were so thought-out and well-developed that I felt like they were actual people. They came together perfectly (or forcefully did the opposite when it came to Blake and Zac, as the protagonist and antagonist of the story). Each event flowed into the next, and though at times I felt it was a little quick paced, it was never rushed or hurried. It was touching, beautiful, creative (I thought Minty was very original), and more than once I cried--by the end, tears were streaming down my face. It has definitely made a spot on my favorite books of all time list. Way to go, Aimée! :)
